Welcome to SOSMentor

We are educating, motivating and empowering children to make healthy food choices and get fit!

SOSMentor is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization, established in 2000 that strives to improve the health of underserved youth and their families in the greater Los Angeles area through mentoring programs and educational support. Our mission is to decrease the alarming rate of childhood obesity and related illness by educating students in health, nutrition and fitness while motivating them to adopt a healthier lifestyle.  We also serve as a source of support for our students for college and career preparation.

In the past 6 years, the SOSMentor ShapeUp program has expanded to over fourteen schools in the Los Angeles Unified School System.  We plan on continuing this growth and ultimately bringing this unique program to school systems across the country. At SOSMentor, we believe that school is the central influence in a child’s life and by creating an environment of health and well-being for our students, we will teach them the proper skills to enjoy long, successful lives.

The ShapeUp Program’s Formula for Success:

Eating Healthy + Getting Fit = Feeling + Looking Good!

SOSMentor created the ShapeUp Program as a response to the alarming rate of childhood obesity and other related diseases currently afflicting our nation. Through a series of workshops focused on proper nutrition and physical fitness, children learn how to redefine their eating habits and make good food choices as well as how to incorporate fitness into their everyday lives. The tools our students learn will help them make changes in and out school that will positively serve them for the rest of their lives.    Click here to learn more about childhood obesity…

Kids Learn Better From Other Kids!  ShapeUp empowers high school students to become role models and advocates for healthy eating and increased physical activity for younger students and their families. We have proven that “peer pressure” can be positive when teens serve as nutrition and fitness role models for younger children.

The 10-Week ShapeUp Program.  ShapeUp provides high school students with fun and educational lessons on general health, nutrition and fitness. An educated team of teachers, registered dietitians and community volunteers are on hand to teach student mentors and provide motivational support. Additional volunteers from the school staff, local businesses, service organizations and local colleges lend their time and expertise to facilitate the program.  Click here to learn more about the ShapeUp Program…

Why Become a Mentor? To help save a life now and in the future!

It's a fact that obesity and malnutrition in childhood are strong risk factors for childhood and adult degenerative diseases. Our country is currently facing a growing epidemic of unfit and overweight children and there is a pressing need to solve this impending health crisis.  Through the ShapeUp program, you can do your part to help get America on the road to good health.  A small commitment on your behalf will not only help to reduce the rate of childhood obesity and related illnesses, but will also help to increase youth participation in regular physical activity, create student health advocates and teach high school students the value of responsibility.
