Inside ShapeUp

Many parents remark that after SOSMentor ShapeUp, their children talk about drinking more water, eating better and getting enough exercise.

Welcome to SOSMentor

and the

ShapeUp Program

We are educating, motivating and empowering children to make healthy food choices and get fit!

SOSMentor is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization, established in 2000, to provide academic mentoring, resources, and educational support to underserved students and their families. Our mission is to educate and motivate underserved youth in greater Los Angeles, in healthy eating, fitness, and college and career planning through after school mentoring programs.

In four short years, the SOSMentor ShapeUp program is in progress in over fourteen schools in the Los Angeles Unified School System, and we plan on bringing this unique program to school systems across the country. We believe that school is the central force, the hub that is an important influence on our children, and by creating an environment of health and well being, it will benefit them in all aspects of their lives.

The ShapeUp Program’s Formula for Success:

Eating Healthy + Getting Fit = Feeling + Looking Good!

SOSMentor created the ShapeUp Program as an essential solution to help fight off childhood obesity. By redefining eating habits, children learn how to make the right choices regarding their meals, in and out of school, and improve their fitness activities. Click here to learn more about childhood obesity…

Kids Learn Better From Other Kids!  ShapeUp empowers high school students to become role models and advocates of healthy eating and increased physical activity for younger students and their families. We have proven that “peer pressure,” can be good when teens become role models for younger children by teaching healthy food choices and fitness.

The 10-Week ShapeUp Program.  ShapeUp provides high school students with education and lessons in nutrition, health and fitness, exercising regularly and recording their activities in journals. An academic team of teachers, registered dietitians and community volunteers are on hand to teach student mentors. Additional volunteers from the school staff, businesses, service organizations and local colleges lend their time and expertise to facilitate this program. Click here to learn more about the ShapeUp Program…

Why Become a Mentor? To help save a life now and in the future!

Obesity and malnutrition in childhood create strong potential health risk factors for childhood and adult degenerative diseases. There has become an epidemic of unfit and overweight children and families in this country, and through the ShapeUp program, you can work with SOSMentor to not only reduce the rate of childhood obesity and related illnesses, but to increase youth participation in regular physical activity and improve students’ fitness levels, create student health advocates, and teach high school students the value of responsibility. Click here to become a mentor....

Mentor Spotlight

I like that I learned what’s good to eat and what’s bad to eat in a fun way with the SOSMentor ShapeUp Program. I would recommend this program to my friends because I know they could learn a lot. Even though my friends think they already know what’s healthy, they forget to practice it and this program teaches you how to stick to a healthy diet during the week.
